Málaga

Saturday - 15th October 2022

As we had a few hours before being picked up by Colletts at the airport at 1-45 p.m., we took the A-line bus into central Málaga to have a look around.

The Holiday Inn Express, nestled between an overhead road, a busy road into Málaga, a petrol station and a car dealership! After arrival we sat in the late afternoon sun having a beer on their small (30 ft by 20ft) patio area outside. One wag (No names, no pack drill) commented that he had not experienced such ambience since he broke down on the hard shoulder of the M6 motorway!

El Cenachero

This bronze sculpture created by Málaga artist Jaime Fernández Pimentel in 1968 represents a typical and traditional figure of Málaga, the "Cenachero" or Fish Vendor. El Cenachero sold fish on the streets of the city while maintaining the balance of the two esparto baskets he carried. These basket are called "cenachos" in Spanish, hence his name. In honour of the twinning of the cities of Málaga and Mobile, Alabama, Málaga City Council donated a replica of this sculpture to Mobile, which has been erected in a square of this American city.

The Bull Ring

After a bull fight an Englishman took up a recommendation to go to the nearby restaurant to try the local delicacy, Bull's Testicles. He was told that they were big, round and juicy..... just like meatballs at Ikea. When the dish came, it was just two scrawny balls on a piece of lettuce. The Englishman called the waiter over for an explanation. "Señor", said the waiter "the Matador he does not always win!"
